Morton to accept Veterans Choice insurance program

MORTON TO ACCEPT VETERANS CHOICE INSURANCE PROGRAM
OCTOBER 13, 2015 – TULSA, OKLA. – Morton Comprehensive Health Services Inc. announced today that it has become a provider under the Veterans Choice Program (VCP).

The health insurance program, included in the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act of 2014, increases the number of choices and options for veterans to receive health care and to provide “timely access to high-quality care” for a Veteran, according to the Veterans Affairs Program website.

“This opportunity to serve our Veterans is another step forward in improving health care access for those Americans who served our country. Morton is committed to increasing the number of veterans that we serve and helping them maintain and improve their health and physical wellbeing,” said John M. Silva, CEO of MCHS.

The Veterans Affairs Program website explains that the VCP provides eligible Veterans with primary care, inpatient and outpatient specialty care, and mental health care when the local Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) cannot provide the services because of (1) lack of available specialists, (2) long wait times (longer than 30 days for care) and (3) extraordinary distance from the Veteran’s home (more than 40 miles drive time or if a Veteran encounters geographic barriers from the nearest VAMC).

Upon visiting Morton, qualified Veterans will be required to present a Veterans Choice Card. The individual will then meet with a Patient Service Representative to enroll as a patient at Morton. After successfully enrolling, then the Veteran will become eligible to receive Morton’s wide range of primary health care services.

The VCP is administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance, based in Phoenix, Ariz.

For more information or to enroll in the VCP, one can contact TriWest Healthcare Alliance and its Veterans Choice Card Contact Center at 866-606-8198.

Veterans Choice Program

In August 2014, President Obama signed into law the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act (VACAA) of 2014, which directed the establishment of a new program to better meet the health care needs of our nation’s Veterans. The law directs the establishment of a Veterans Choice Card benefit that allows eligible Veterans who live more than 40 miles from a VA facility or are unable to get a VA appointment within 30 days of their preferred date, or within 30 days of the date determined medically necessary by their physicians, to obtain approved care in their community instead. Morton receives $482,418 federal grant for west Tulsa location

MORTON RECEIVES $482,418 GRANT TO ESTABLISH A WEST TULSA LOCATION

August 11, 2015 – TULSA, OKLA. – Morton Comprehensive Health Services announced today that it received a $482,418 New Access Point federal grant to expand primary care services into West Tulsa. Morton is one of five community health centers in the state to receive federal funding for new primary care access points in this latest round of Community Health Center expansion.

“We are so excited at the prospect of adding our fourth health center location within Tulsa, especially in a community like West Tulsa, which has virtually no primary care services,” said John M. Silva, CEO of Morton.

“Morton continues to work with at-risk communities to provide affordable, comprehensive and low-cost health care to vulnerable, poor and uninsured residents.”

Morton will need to revisit its original grant proposal, submitted to the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) office over 18 months ago, which included strategic partnerships and collaborative agreements with other organizations and agencies.

“Given that it has been well over a year since the proposal was submitted, Morton wants to make sure that all of our original plans and assumptions remain in place. We plan to locate the West Tulsa Health Center in the Sandy Park area, insuring easy access for both West Tulsa and Sand Springs’ residents,” Silva added.

The largest federally qualified health center in northeastern Oklahoma, Morton will reach out to public housing developments, isolated neighborhoods, apartment complexes, schools, daycare programs, churches and community organizations to identify families in need of accessible and affordable health services in the area.

In partnership with the HHS, Morton’s goal is “to provide quality-focused, cost-effective and family-based health services” to its patients.

In a press release from HHS, grants totaling $169 million were awarded to 266 community health centers throughout the U.S.

“Across the country, health centers have provided a source of high-quality primary care for people in rural and urban communities for 50 years,” said Acting Deputy Secretary Mary Wakefield.

According to HHS, this most recent announcement will add to the more than 700 new health center sites that have been developed as a result of the Affordable Care Act.

Community health centers through 1,300 community-based and patient-directed locations with 9,000 sites collectively serve nearly 23 million people with affordable and accessible health care.
